Air Koryo traces its history to 1950 when it was first established as SOKAO or Soviet–North Korean Airline as a link between the cities of Pyongyang and Moscow. The airline was North Korea’s state airline, commencing operations on September 21, 1955 with Lisunov Li-2, Antonov An-2, and Ilyushin Il-12 aircraft. In the 1960s, Air Koryo eventually added Ilyushin Il-14s and Ilyushin Il-18s to their airline fleet.

The latest Air Koryo reviews dated on April 7, 2017 wrote that “The departure and arrival were punctual, staff smiling and friendly, the aircraft, including toilets, was clean and there were magazines and newspapers at the entrance. The food was a chicken burger but the drink selection was rather limited, either water or one type of soft drink. It is maybe not the most luxurious airline but the service for a short-haul flight is better than European or American airlines I have used for the same distance.”
