Air Namibia, the national airline of Namibia, traces its history to the establishment of South West Air Transport (SWAT) in November 1946. The airline merged in 1959 with Oryx Aviation, becoming South West Airways or “Suidwes Lugdiens” in Afrikaans. A member of the International Air Transport Association and the African Airlines Association, they then became Namibia’s flag carrier, controlling all the country’s air transportation, adopting their current name Air Namibia in October 1991 following Namibia’s independence.

Background and History

Air Namibia has been wholly owned by the Government of Namibia since December 2013. Reflecting their identity as a Namibian national airline, “Carrying the spirit of Namibia” is their company slogan.

Air Namibia’s main international hub’s at Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport and secondary domestic hub at Windhoek Eros Airport; the airline is headquartered in Windhoek, Namibia. From here, they operate a number of scheduled domestic, regional, and international passenger and cargo flight services. As of October 2016, Air Namibia’s fleet consists of 4 Airbus A319-100, 2 Airbus A330-200, and 4 Embraer ERJ 135ER flying to 15 destinations.

Based on 64 Air Namibia reviews on Airlinequality, Air Namibia got a 6 out of 10 star rating. This was due to a mix of positive and negative Air Namibia reviews, though mostly, the airline received great reviews for their inflight experience and friendly cabin crew.

Air Namibia reviews writers appreciated the airline’s “plenty food and drink,” great price. One reviewer shared: “The A330 is a modern aircraft and the cabin was modern and the seats comfortable. During this flight we had two meals which were good but no more. On this flight there is no wifi and the inflight entertainment was really bad – a little choice of films only available in two languages. For me the worst thing on this flight is the cabin staff. There are not pro-active and not friendly and helpful. We were forbidden to stay in the back galley and we had to return to sit as soon as we had finished drinking and eating. I don’t recommend this airline for that, but all the rest of the flight was good.”

Efficient Airline

Air Namibia flyers generally found their flights agreeable, though I think that the airline should improve their inflight service considering they’re Namibia’s national airline.
