Origins and Ownership

Air New Zealand originated in 1940 as Tasman Empire Airways Limited(Teal), a company operating trans-Tasman flights between New Zealand and Australia, it was renamed to Air new Zealand in 1965 when TEAL became wholly owned by the New Zealand government. The airline serves international routes until 1978, when the government merged it with the domestic New Zealand National Airways Corporation into a single airline under the Air New Zealand name. Air New Zealand was privatised in 1989, but returned to the majority government ownership in 2001 after near bankruptcy, due to the failed tie up with Australian carrier: Ansett Australia.

Air New Zealand CEO, Christopher LuxonChristopher Luxon was appointed Group Manager International Airline at Air New Zealand from May 2011 and took over the Chief Executive Officer role on January 1, 2013. Christopher Luxon was the former President and CEO of Unilever Canada, based in Toronto; and was also a key member of Unilever’s North American leadership team. Christopher Luxon graduated with a Master of Commerce in Business Administration from the University of Canterbury.

Flights there and back were only 3 hours each way. Food was average – more of a snack. As to be expected in economy class seats a bit cramped. However, okay for such a short flight. Flight crew were friendly and did a good job.”

—Jenny M (Chertsey)

Air New Zealand Meals

Pleasant atmosphere created by attentive staff, especially Singaporean born Jennifer, was appreciated prior to a long flight. Very comfortable for sleeping on overnight flight, although still find disadvantages in window angle for viewing, and necessity for choice between either seat or bed with present Air NZ cabin system.”

—Deejay606 (Hamilton, New Zealand)
