Origins and Ownership

As one of two major airlines in South Korea, Asiana Airlines (formerly Seoul Airlines) operates flights to four continents. The airline has its domestic hub at Gimpo International Airport and its international hub at Incheon International Airport. Asiana Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance, and operates 14 domestic and 90 international passenger route, as well as 27 cargo routes across: Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania. Asiana Airlines is the largest shareholder in Air Busan, a low-cost regional carrier joint venture with Busan Metropolitan City.

Asiana Airlines was established on February 17, 1988 and started operations in December 1988 with flights to Busan. It was formed by Kumho Asiana Group—formerly Kumho Group, and was originally recognized as Seoul Air International. Kim Soo-Cheon, Asiana Airlines’ CEO and President, has been with the airline since its founding in 1988, when he began working in the Seoul Passenger Sales Office. He worked in sales for 9 years until he was transferred to the Shanghai Sales Office in 1997, and by the following year, he moved to the Guangzhou Sales office. Two years later, in the year 2000, Kim returned to Seoul to manage passenger marketing and sales in the greater China region. By 2002, Kim was promoted to General Manager of Human Resources Management and was promoted again to Vice President and senior Vice President of Personnel & Labor in 2005 respectively. By 2008 He was promoted to the position of Executive Vice President and appointed President & CEO of Asiana Airlines’ regional affiliate, in Busan, the same year. He was appointed President of Asiana Airlines on January 1, 2014 in recognition of his success at and contributions to both Asiana Airlines and Air Busan.

Asiana Airlines has a fleet size of 84, and is consists of the following aircrafts: Airbus A320-200, Boeing 747-400M, Boeing 777-200ER and so much more. Serving passengers to over 84 destinations, Asiana Airlines aims to give their passengers the convenience of flying and traveling.
