Origins and Ownership

The airline was founded on May 24, 1985 by Chao Kuang Piu, Dragonair’s honorary chairman. Dragonair was the first local competitor for Hong Kong’s largest airline: Cathay Pacific, for forty years; and since the airline’s inception, Cathay Pacific fought vigorously to block the airline’s flight-slot applications. The airline began services to Phuket, Thailand, as well as six secondary cities in mainland China on a regular charter basis in 1986. In 1987, the airline became the first Hong Kong-based airline to join as an active member of the International Air Transport Association.

Dragonair Interior

Flew from Hong Kong to Kathmandu, Nepal 3 1/2 weeks ago and then returned yesterday. I was expecting Dragonair to be an inferior service to Cathay Pacific, their sister airline, however, I was pleasantly surprised. The aircraft was far newer, the seat pitch more generous and the staff were caring and attentive. I would definitely fly Dragonair again.”

Dragonair Food

“As a penangnite, I definitely love this direct flight. Now became Cathay Dragon. My seat was at the middle of the aircraft. I did not order for meal, so no meal was served. The crew were friendly and nice. Yes, 5-star for cleanliness. In total, it was enjoyable flight.”

Dragonair Interior

“The crew was great, gave good service and the meal service was nice. The IFE was not the best, neither remote or touch screen worked properly. The movies and TV shows offered was all that great. The seats are small and does not feel comfortable.”
